A Journey Rooted in Excellence

As an enthusiastic English teacher, I’ve spent years infusing the joy of learning into my students by fostering a dynamic and engaging atmosphere. My commitment to listening, leveraging multimedia tools, and promoting critical thinking has left an indelible mark on countless learners.

From the South Side of Chicago to Academic Heights

My educational roots lie in the vibrant South Side of Chicago, where I attended Englewood High School. Later, I pursued my undergraduate degree in American history at Chicago State University, followed by a graduate degree in English.

During my academic journey, I proudly became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Theta Chapter, dedicated to promoting education through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College program since 1922. This commitment to education has always been close to my heart.

One of the highlights of my college experience was the Illinois Legislative Staff Intern Program at Chicago State University. In this intensive program, I, along with ten fellow students, delved deep into the Illinois legislative process, culminating in an educational internship in Springfield, Illinois, alongside state representative Harold Washington.

A Record of Academic Excellence

My academic journey was marked by excellence. As an undergraduate, I achieved a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. During my graduate studies, I maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning accolades such as the Graduate Division Honors Award, All-American Scholar designation in 2002, and the prestigious Irwin J. Suloway Exceptional English Graduate Paper Award in 2003.

Mastering English Studies

My graduate studies in English encompassed a wide range of enriching courses, from Black American Fiction to Literary Criticism, Women’s Voices, English Literature/Shakespeare, Literary Research Methods, Descriptive Grammar, to Southern Literature. These courses broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding of the English language and literature.

Empowering Through Teaching

From 2006 to 2015, I had the privilege of serving as an adjunct English professor at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Here, I conducted popular introductory composition and literature classes, earning top percentile ratings in teaching categories based on peer and student evaluations.

Specifically, I taught Developmental English 099, English Composition 101, and English Composition 102, each designed to empower students with critical thinking and writing skills essential for college-level success. I take immense pride in the fact that over 98% of my students passed the English 101 Portfolio and the course itself.

Guiding with a Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is clear and student-centric. I view people as partners in their educational journey, deserving of respect and empowerment. I create an environment where learning is fun, exciting, and collaborative, where everyone’s unique ideas are valued.

I am a patient, understanding, and encouraging tutor, focused on nurturing each individual’s writing style. I employ multimedia tools to facilitate learning, covering areas such as grammar, journal writing, error correction, and essay revisions.

A Multifaceted Journey

Beyond academia, my professional path led me through roles as a training manager for the prestigious law office of McDermott, Will and Emery, and as a law clerk at Overton, Schwartz, and Yacker. I also contributed my expertise to The First National Bank of Chicago (now Chase) in various capacities.

Life Beyond Work

Outside the classroom and office, my interests are as diverse as my professional experiences. I’ve explored my passion for acting, took to the basketball court with SWISH in Chicago, and ventured into indoor roller skating. My wife and I even ran a video production business specializing in personal and business functions.

Today, you might find me perfecting my steppin, playing tennis, racquetball, or golf.
